The idea was simple. Bring a craft alternative to Cobra and Kingfisher to the British-Indian market.
Fuelled by naive optimism and blissful ignorance, we got to work. How hard could it be?
One empty bank account, two bruised egos, and three years of failure later - it turns out the answer is hard. Very hard.
So we did what any good and rational business person would do, we cut our losses invested in a nano brewery and iterated and iterated and iterated. Finally landing on a beer we are proud to put our names to.
Brewed in-house, Surā brings together the best of British, Indian, and American ingredients to deliver a modern IPA specifically brewed to complement the spices and complexity of Indian food.
Balanced character enhances, rather than overwhelms the intricate flavours. Subtle hints of citrus and fruit cut through the heat. The typical bitterness of an IPA is pared back to deliver a refreshing finish without clashing with the spices.
This, we believe, makes Surā the craft alternative to Cobra and Kingfisher.
5th Buddhist precept:
“I agree to exercise the rule of abstinence from fermented beverages (Surā), one source of the
recklessness”
Sura is our nod to the spiritual ancestor of beer today. Long before Burton-Upon-Trent, beer (as we now know it) was a staple of ancient Indian life. Alcoholic beverages came in two forms, Soma and Sura. Soma, a psychoactive concoction, was the reserve of holy men and elites, often used in rituals.
Sura is described in ancient texts as being made from either barley, wheat or rice and fermented using yeast; the same ingredients used in beers today. A recreational drink that was consumed by warriors and peasants alike.

For a long time the corner shop has been the butt of the joke, something to be mocked and ridiculed. But we think it’s time to re-write that narrative.
The corner shop is the story of the immigrant. It is the story of those who left everything they knew behind, but never relied on a hand out. It is the story of being spat at on the street, but never giving in. It is the story of risking everything in search of a better future.
Far from being something to ridicule, we think that’s something to celebrate. Not just for the British Asian community, but for anyone, regardless of race or religion, who shares the values of risk-taking, sacrifice and hard work.
